Courtesy Styles Equality Act 2017

An Act to provide for the extension of courtesy styles to all spouses of peers and knights.

BE IT ENACTED by the King’s Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords and Burgesses in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows: 1. SHORT TITLE This act may be cited for all purposes as “Courtesy Styles Equality Act.” 2. EXTENSION OF COURTESY STYLES TO ALL SPOUSES OF PEERS A. Any lawful spouse of a Peer or Knight of the Kingdom of Scone shall be entitled to use the courtesy style consistent with the highest rank of the Peer to whom they are married. B. In the event that a spouse holds a peerage or knighthood in their own right, they shall still be entitled to use the courtesy style of their spouse. 3. SPOUSES AND THE HOUSE OF PEERS Lawful spouses of Peers of the Realm are not entitled to a seat, place, voice, or vote in the House of Peers unless they shall hold a Peerage in their own right. 4. SPOUSES OF KNIGHTS OF THE REALM A. Lawful spouses of Knights of the Realm as well as Baronets shall be entitled to use the honourary suffix “Esquire”. B. Lawful spouses of Knights of the Realm shall not be entitled to use the post-nominal letters of the Spouse’s order or baronetage, unless they hold the same in their own right. 5. COMMENCEMENT This legislation and all the provisions therein shall come into force upon receiving the Royal Assent. SCHEDULE: THE MEANING OF CERTAIN TERMS EMPLOYED IN THIS ACT: “Lawful spouse” shall refer to any individual who has been legally married to the other individual according to the laws of the jurisdiction in which they are resident.
